Two crashes have occurred within 100 metres of one another on State Highway 1 north of Wellington.
Police were called to the first incident just before the Ngauranga interchange at 6.03 pm Friday.
A police spokesperson said by the time they arrived at the scene at 6.11pm, a second crash had occurred "about 100 metres" north of the first, causing traffic to become congested.
One crash involved two cars, the other a car and a bus. It was not yet clear which was which.
Wellington Free Ambulance said it had attended one of the crashes and taken one patient to hospital. They were in a stable condition.
NZTA said the road had been blocked but was now clear, with traffic easing at about 7.15pm.
