Two people are injured, one seriously, following a two-vehicle crash in Lower Hutt.
Emergency services are at the scene of a the crash on Eastern Hutt Rd, near the Pomare railway station.
Police were alerted to the crash at 11.40am. The Serious Crash unit is at the scene.
The road is closed as investigators examine the scene.
Two ambulances from Wellington Free Ambulance are attending the crash.
Spokeswoman Sarah Coulthard said one person was seriously injured and trapped inside their vehicle and another person being treated at the scene was in moderate condition.
"Once [the person is serious condition] has been released from the car, they will be transported to Wellington Hospital."
The person in moderate condition would be transported to Hutt Hospital.
A neighbour, who declined to give her name, said the straight piece of road was an unusual place for a crash.
She had spoken to the police but they gave her no indication of what had happened.
Acting Sergeant of Road Policing Zoe Eginton said the drivers were the sole occupants of both cars. She said it was too early to say what had happened but neither vehicle had crossed the centre line.
Diversions have been put in place, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.
