A person is dead after a house fire in Waimamaku, Northland on New Year's Eve.
Emergency services were called to the house on Wekaweka Rd about 10.24pm, police said in a statement.
The house was "well alight" when they arrived, with one person inside, a Fire and Emergency spokesman said.
Four crews were there at the height of the fire, with some working into the night to dampen it down.
One crew remained on Tuesday morning, and two fire investigators were at the scene to find the cause of the fire.
Police said one person died in the fire.
"A scene guard is in place and a scene examination is taking place today," a statement said on Tuesday morning.
"Police will be making enquiries in conjunction with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire."
