A child has died after being hit by a truck in Kensington, Whangārei.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman, Scott Osmond, confirmed a child had died at the scene.
Two fire engines were at the scene and helping police with scene protection.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened just after 8am on Wednesday on Kamo Rd.
A worker at a nearby motel said the crash happened "right out front". He believed "a guy got run over by a truck".
He said the road was not a common crash site, despite being one of the main roads into Whangārei.
A staff member at a nearby bakery believed the crash to be serious due to the number of emergency service vehicles nearby.
"There are quite a few."
A St John spokeswoman said it sent two ambulances to the scene at 8.09am.
She said no transport was required.
The serious crash had been notified, the police spokeswoman said.
Kamo Rd was likely to be closed for several hours.
