A person is in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit following a two-car crash in Levin.

Emergency services were called to a crash between an SUV and a van on the intersection of Arapaepae Rd and Queen St in Levin, just before 6.15pm on Monday.

Levin volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer Lindsay Walker said a crew was called to remove two people from the SUV. They also closed part of Arapaepae Rd, which is part of State Highway 57, to allow a rescue helicopter to land.

St John spokeswoman Ngaire Jones said four ambulances were sent to the scene from Palmerston North and a helicopter was sent from Wellington. One person was taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

Capital and Coast District Health Board spokesman Chas Te Runa said the patient in Wellington Hospital was in the intensive care unit in a serious condition on Tuesday morning.

Two people were taken to Palmerston North Hospital by ambulance, one with serious injuries and the other with moderate injuries.

Walker said the intersection was "notorious" for crashes.
