Two fatal crashes, one on State Highway 1 in Northland and the other on a busy suburban street in Hamilton, have claimed the lives of two people.

One person died and two others had minor injuries after a three-car crash on SH1, near Prescott Rd, in Ruakaka, on Wednesday evening.

A police spokeswoman said the crash happened about 6.55pm. "Two others have sustained minor injuries," the spokeswoman said.

SH1 was closed in the area but reopened around 11pm.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said two fire trucks were sent to the scene at 6.54pm. One person was initially trapped, the spokesman said. By 8.58pm the person had been freed.

St John spokeswoman Beverley Tse said ambulances arrived at the scene around 9.03pm. Two patients with minor injuries were taken to Whangārei Hospital, Tse said.

In Hamilton a motorcyclist died following a crash on Peachgrove Rd in Claudelands.

Police cordoned off a section of the road south of the busy Five Cross Roads roundabout following a crash about 6.25pm. The rider died at the scene, police confirmed in a statement.

Traffic around the crash scene remained heavy, with northbound vehicles on Peachgrove Rd diverted down Daisy St. The police serious crash unit were at the scene and were asking motorists to avoid the area.

Officers were seen examining a motorbike. The road was expected to be closed for some time.

One Daisy St resident, who declined to be named, said she first became aware of the crash after she heard a series of police sirens.

"There's always police cars going up and down this street, it's a very busy stretch of road," she said. "We were having tea but when I came out and saw all the traffic building up, that's when I realised something must have happened."

Police have appealed for anyone who knows anything about the crash, or recognises the motorcycle, to urgently get in touch with Constable Matthew Burke at Hamilton Police on 07 858 6200.
